Helena Zec selected for 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. Award

December 11, 2012

Helena Zec, BME graduate student in the JHU School of Medicine, has been selected as one of the recipients of the Johns Hopkins 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. Award. This award recognizes outstanding commitment to community service by faculty, staff and graduate students of the Johns Hopkins University and Hospital. Helena was selected based on her community service with the Incentive Mentoring Program (“IMP”). IMP engages underperforming Baltimore high school students confronting significant barriers outside of the classroom by providing each student with a family of committed volunteers and increased access to community resources. Helena joined IMP in 2010 as a Head of Household. Since 2011, Helena has been a grandparent and helps lead four teams of family members. Her efforts helped facilitate the expansion of IMP to the Academy for College and Career Exploration, a high school in Hampden, Baltimore.

Helena will be honored at the 31st annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration event on January 11, 2013. President Ronald Daniels, Dr. Paul Rothman and Mr. Ron Peterson will be in attendance to congratulate the recipients.
