Dr. Rachel Karchin is promoted to Associate Professor

Rachel Karchin has been promoted to Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering with tenure effective July 1, 2013. Dr. Karchin holds appointments with the Institute for Computational Medicine, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the Department of Computer Science in the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering, as well as with the Institute of Genetic Medicine in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Karchin’s research is focused on the development of computational methods to assess the impact of DNA sequence variation on human health. She has received funding for her research from the National Science Foundation, most recently a three year, $695,000 grant to fund her research collaboration with Dr. Manel Camps of the University of California, Santa Cruz; from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Mental Health, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

When announcing Dr. Karchin’s promotion, Elliot McVeigh, Director, Department of Biomedical Engineering, stated, “It gives me great pleasure to pass on the news that Rachel has been promoted to Associate Professor. She has made a significant impact in her field and this has been widely recognized both inside of Johns Hopkins University and by the international community.” Raimond Winslow, Director, Institute for Computational Medicine, stated, “Dr. Karchin is blazing a new frontier of cancer biology in which computational modeling will be used to identify the gene mutations which drive tumor progression. Ultimately, this computational approach will lead to more personalized, precision cancer therapies. Her work is receiving international recognition, and we are all proud that she is a part of the Institute for Computational Medicine.”

An inaugural talk and reception to celebrate Dr. Karchin’s accomplishments is currently being planned.
