Biomedical engineering is, by nature, an interdisciplinary endeavor. New advances require a variety of experimental and conceptual approaches. It is not surprising, therefore, that faculty are involved in research collaborations that transcend department boundaries. Indeed, biomedical engineering has been a key player in establishing a number of interdepartmental research programs and centers, including the Center for Hearing and Balance (with the Departments of Neuroscience and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery), the Center for Biomedical Visualization (with the Departments of Radiology, Computer Science, and Biophysics), the Center for Imaging Science (with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins and other departments at Washington University, Harvard University, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, University of Texas at Austin, Brown University, and Yale University), and the Center for Computational Medicine and Biology.
All of these centers provide comprehensive research opportunities for our students. One of the unique features of our programs
is that graduate students have almost complete freedom to choose a research laboratory anywhere in the University. Students interested in pursuing
research in a particular focus area receive guidance from advisers in selecting advanced "core" courses that form the backbone for
work in that area.
