BME News Highlights
Faculty HighlightsJanuary 5, 2009 Bader receives Kleberg Foundation grantDr. Joel Bader, Assistant Professor in BME, has been awarded a Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation grant. The five-year, $500,000 grant will support his research project entitled "Systems Biology and Human Disease Genetics."
Dr. Bader runs The Bader Lab of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. The award will assist the Bader lab's search for genetic variants that contribute to diseases including sudden cardiac death, cancer, and autism. The lab has been mapping how individual genes and proteins are organized into larger pathways and systems. The resulting systems-level maps will now be used to determine whether specific pathways are hotspots for mutations that lead to disease. This research aims to provide improved assessment of disease risk and could point to new targets for therapeutic intervention.
The Kleberg Foundation's greatest emphasis in recent years has been on medical research, as part of a larger goal to support organizations reflecting the interests of Mr. and Mrs. Kleberg.
