BME scores several 2010 PURA grant awardees

BME junior Millie Shah was one of several BME students receiving a 2010 Provost's Undergraduate Research Award. Lloyd Minor, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, hosted the annual PURA ceremony on April 12 honoring the achievements of the student researchers.

Millie's research, titled “Computational Modeling of VEGF and sFlt-1 to Stimulate Preeclampsia and Evaluate Treatments,” hopes to learn more about the causes of preeclampsia, a medical condition that can cause serious harm to both pregnant woman and the fetus. Working in the lab of Feilim Mac Gabhann, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering, Shah has been using a computer model that mimics the cellular imbalances that may trigger this disease.

Other Summer and Fall 2010 PURA recipients in BME include:

  • Shane Steinert-Threlkeld (sponsored by Dr. Tilak Ratnanather), with "A New Approach to Biomedical Ontologies"
  • Andrew Warren (sponsored by Dr. Jennifer Elisseeff), with "Development of a photobiomodulation treatment system using a 3D hydrogel culture model"
  • Stephen Dria (sponsored by Dr. Nitish Thakor and Dr. Avindra Nath), with "Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Neural Stem Cell Differentiation and Proliferation"
  • Avik Som (sponsored by Dr. Jennifer Elisseeff), with "Cyclodextrin (CD-COOH) Hydrogels: Mimicking Cellular Microenvironments for Cartilage Tissue Engineering"
  • Peter Yang (sponsored by Dr. Warren Grayson), with "Multilayered Solid Lipid Nanoparticles for Transdermal Patch Drug Delivery"
