July 26, 2013

Jeffrey Siewerdsen, Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been elected to serve as a Board Member-at-Large for the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) beginning January 1, 2014. The AAPM is a scientific and professional organization composed of scientists whose interests are dedicated to safe and knowledgeable use of radiation in medical procedures. Major areas of activity include research and education in medical imaging and radiation therapy. In addition to now serving as a Board Member-at-Large, Dr. Siewerdsen’s service to the AAPM includes Chair of the Annual Meeting Scientific Program, member of the Science Council, Director of the Imaging Physics Program, Vice-Chair of the Imaging Physics Committee, and Associate Editor of the Medical Physics Journal. He is also the AAPM Liaison to the Scientific Program of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Dr. Elliot McVeigh, Director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Biomedical Engineering, commented “Serving on the AAPM Board is a big honor for Jeff and our department. His service in the imaging community is a great example of action at the interface of disciplines between engineering, physics, and clinical practice ranging from radiology and radiotherapy to surgery.”

Dr. Siewerdsen's research focuses on the physics of medical imaging, new technologies for 3D x-ray imaging, and new methods for 3D image reconstruction and registration. His work emphasizes translation of new technologies to image-guided interventions and diagnostic imaging. He holds appointments in BME, Computer Science, Radiology, and the Armstrong Institute and heads the I-STAR Lab.
