Collaborators in BME and Medicine shed light on insulin production

Andre Levchenko, Associate Professor in BME and Jin Zhang, Dept. of Pharmacology have published a paper in Nature Chemical Biology revealing their discovery of a tunable circuit in pancreatic cells that integrates and interprets incoming hormonal, metabolic and electrical signals to determine how to generate the cell's output of insulin.

Levchenko's team's contribution was to build a mathematical model of this circuit to better study and predict how it is used in a cell.
