BME PHD STUDENT HANDBOOK

Student Awards

The high quality of the research conducted by our students has led to their winning many awards. Therefore, students are strongly urged to apply for awards, both within Johns Hopkins and at the national level.

There are many benefits to successfully competing for awards. First, they bring personal distinction to the winner and acclaim to the Ph.D. Program. This personal distinction is not only a source of pride, but it may prove valuable in obtaining future positions and fellowships. Second, competitions, especially at the national level, provide an excellent chance to meet students and faculty from other fine biomedical engineering programs. Third, some competitions pay a portion (or all of) finalists' transportation to a national meetings, where oral presentations are made. Since most of our students who have not been winners of contests have, at least, been finalists, these competitions have helped substantially with transportation costs. Finally, winners of student awards usually receive a substantial cash award. A partial list of awards is provided below. Current information on these and other competitions can be obtained in the program director's office.

  • The Biomedical Engineering Society Student Paper Award
  • The Michael A. Shanoff Research Award
  • The David Israel Macht Research Prize
  • The Paul Ehrlich Prizes
  • The American Heart Association Student Research Award
  • Donald B. Lindsley Award of the Society
