BME PHD STUDENT HANDBOOK

Structure of the Program

Although the physical home of the doctoral program in Biomedical Engineering is the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the School of Medicine, this program is both interdivisional and interdepartmental. Therefore, Biomedical Engineering students are considered full-time students on both the Medical School and Homewood campuses, and they routinely take courses on both campuses. The program is overseen by the Committee on Biomedical Engineering, a University committee whose members are appointed by the Provost. The Committee meets at least monthly to supervise students, review dissertation proposals, discuss program requirements, and act on admissions. Doctoral dissertations are brought before the Medical School's M.A.-Ph.D. Committee as informational items, and they are formally approved by the Graduate Board of the University
