You should discuss with your advisory committee your choice of summer research preceptor and your courses for your second year. Also, read the section in this Handbook on the Teaching Requirement
Discuss with your advisory committee courses with which you would be interested in assisting

Keep open the date for the annual BME Student/Faculty Dinner, which is in late May or early June
Information about playing on the softball team will be sent out via email
June and July
Prepare, before July 15, to discuss a research paper before a joint meeting with your advisory committee
Register for the Summer semester (210.802 - Special Studies & Research)
Attend the student summer seminar series
Be sure to attend the Biomedical Engineering Department's Annual Picnic!
SECOND YEAR
June
You should be working full-time in a laboratory this summer
mid-August
Register for second year courses, conferring, if necessary, with your advisors
Evaluate your summer's research experience. Will it lead to a dissertation? Feel free to discuss this issue with your advisors and/or the program director
late-August
Prepare for the Junior Progress Committee, a brief report (approximately 500
words) on your research accomplishments for the summer and circulate it via
email to your advisors and Hong Lan. Hong will forward
these reports to the Junior Progress Committee. This report is due by September
1
November
Arrange, by email, to see individuals on your advisory committee
Meet with your advisors. Are your courses turning out as expected? What courses do you plan to take next semester? Are your research plans coalescing? Have you identified a series of engineering/mathematics courses which culminates in at least 2 (semester) advanced (600 or 700) courses? When will you be ready to take your GBO exam? Who are likely to be the examiners?
April
Second year students are responsible for organizing the annual, Departmental
Picnic. They should check with Hong for the guidelines
Arrange, by email, to see individuals on your advisory committee
Final arrangements for a summer research preceptor should have been made. You should be serious about doing your dissertation with this preceptor
You should discuss with the program director and your advisors your plans for the GBO exam. These plans should include a proposed date and potential examiners
If you intend to take your GBO exam early in the summer, you should be studying for it, and you should have scheduled practice exams with senior students
THIRD YEAR
late-August
Prepare for the Junior Progress Committee a brief report (approximately 500

Consult with your advisors about your course selections for the autumn and about your plans for the GBO exam if you have not taken it.
If you plan to take your GBO exam in the autumn, arrange GBO practice exam(s) with senior students
December
Having passed your GBO exam, meet with your advisors to map out the relationship between your research and the remainder of your coursework.
Discuss the fulfillment of your teaching requirement and the timing of your thesis proposal with the program director
FOURTH AND LATER YEARS
Progress in the fourth and subsequent years is monitored by the Senior Progress Committee. Details of this process can be found in Senior Progress Committee section.
