What does the MSE program look for in a degree candidate?

To be considered for admission, students must hold a bachelor's degree in engineering. Exceptional students with degrees in basic science may also be considered, but may be required to take a number of courses to overcome deficiencies in their curriculum. Regardless of the specific degree, the applicant should have completed a balanced program in college-level physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology. Undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins may opt to apply in their junior year for a five-year combined B.S./M.S.E. program. With each applicant, the Admission's Committee considers the undergraduate academic record, letters of recommendation, results of Graduate Record Examinations (required), and overall motivation of the individual to pursue graduate studies.  Average GPA is typically 3.7 or above (on a 4.0 scale).  Strong research experience is desirable.

What financial assistance is available?

A standard financial aid package is available to all students who are offered admission in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The funding included in this package is as follows: 50% tuition is awarded by the G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering; 30% tuition is awarded for a mandatory teaching assistantship; and additional funding is typically obtained by working on a funded project as a research assistant. University faculty and laboratories sponsor a number of research projects that pay research assistant stipends and fund the remaining 20% tuition. The research assistantships are individually arranged by matching project needs and student qualifications and backgrounds, and are usually awarded after students have spent one semester at Hopkins. For further information on the cost of living at Johns Hopkins, please consult the current estimates of tuition and other expenses .
